I had a really good time with “Men in Black 3”, and I don’t think it was just due to the underwhelming expectations derived from the trailer. The director, Barry Sonnenfeld, has at his disposal a fairly witty script. (When J undertakes his “time jump”, to travel back to 1969, he literally takes a giant leap, and while slipping through other eras, he finds himself accompanied, at one point, by a fellow jumper a Wall Street executive, presumably, during the Great Depression.
Before there was Prince in his ruffled shirts and redingotes, well in advance of an androgynous David Bowie, a bare chested Mick Jagger and a lace loving Steven Tyler; before every modern day rock star or pop star who thinks they are making a statement by turning up in a sheer, frilly shirt, a bejeweled turban or a pair of high heels; there was Little Richard: preening. Today, a lot of outr style choices come freighted with cultural commentary and urgent political communiques. Fashion speaks ever more eloquently, but it can sometimes feel like a ponderous semiotics seminar..
We suggest that such a “laboratization” has also taken place in the case of Occupy, and that it was in a sense a “double laboratization” which has occurred top down as well as bottom up. We speak of “laboratization bottom up” to indicate practices and artefacts which show that the social and spatial settings of Occupy have been carefully constructed and intentionally shaped by activists. We chose the concept of the laboratory because speaking of fields with regards to such spaces seems to underrate the activists’ reflexivity and falls back into what Latour called a “nave belief in the other’s nave belief.” Seeing the sites of Occupy as socio political laboratories shall therefore also contribute to a perspective on political movement which emphasizes a hierarchical relations between researching and researched actors as well as an acknowledgement of the latter’s strategic efforts.
But lemme tell you how much I miss being at 190, I felt good, confidence was through the roof, I loved seeing my reflection, I loved being able to do all the things I couldn’t at 315. In the end it’s so worth, but ultimately I’ve been telling my brother who’s also trying to lose weight, you gotta want it. You can’t half ass this shit and you have to really want it.
